00700 Dear Mario,
00800
00900 I suppose by now you wonder whatever happened to me. My autumn plans were
01000 rather turned about and when I got back to Stanford I became involved in all sorts
01100 of unexpected and time consuming projects. I have made many improvements in my
01200 computer music printing system. I've enclosed some examples for your inspection. The
01300 INVENTION SEPTIMA by Bonporti is my latest San Andreas Press publication. I got a
01400 nice review of my Woodwind Trio publication in the Music Library Assosiation bulletin,
01500 NOTES. I have also enclosed this for you.
01550
01600 The single pages of music include the first pages of Cowell's "Romantic"
01700 QUARTET and Ligeti's SAN FRANCISCO POLYPHONY. I did the Cowell just to show
01800 the capability of my system to handle unusual rhythmic units. All the spacing
01900 in this example was done automatically by the computer. The clearest copy is
02000 a direct Xerox output from the computer and the darker copy (too dark) is a
02100 photo-litho copy of a felt pen copy made by the computer's plotter.
02150
02200 The Ligeti page shows how I can handle mammoth orchestrations. The
02300 page was assembled from 14 separate units and then drawn on the plotter as
02400 a single unit with consistent spacing in all parts. The final prints were made
02500 by a high-quality photo-litho process that required making three negatives
02600 which were then pieced together. This last was necessary because my original
02700 page was too large for the photo copy system. The final reduction was to
02800 about 25%. This size was chosen to fit the standard 11x17 paper. The total
02900 cost at the print shop - for the photography, plate, paper and printing 100 copies
03000 was about $20. I believe my time on the computer was about 5 hours. I think if
03100 I were to do the rest of the score the pages would average about 4 or 5 hours each.
03250
03300 Currently I am working on the innards of my program to improve computer
03400 efficiency. The actual computer time (not human time) involved in this work is
03500 figured in minutes and seconds. The Cowell page takes about 30 seconds of
03600 computer time to produce a Xerox proof and about 2 minutes of computer time to
03650 produce a master sheet for publication.
03800
03900 Generally I am quite pleased with the current state of my program. What I
04000 would like to do at this point is to try to get it operational on a mini-computer.
04100 I don't anticipate any very great problems, but there are sure to be very many
04200 small problems with an undertaking of this scope. If it is at all possible I
04300 would like you to be able to see this system in operation here at Stanford some
04400 day. If you get to the west coast you should really try to make a visit.
04500 I may be passing through New York again toward the end of August. I am planning
04600 a month's trip to Paris at that time. The earlier part of the summer will be
04700 very busy as I will be teaching computer music first and then there is a special
04800 seminar for the Paris IRCAM group planned here for part of August. My teaching
04900 schedule for the spring is not too heavy so I could fit in a New York trip if
05000 it were useful.
